FDM Server Specifications
FDM recommends that clients have one primary server and one redundant secondary server to host the FDM RMS/FDM CAD database. In addition, a communications server will be used to host the Ani/Ali, FDMeBiz services and serve to manage user connections using the City’s TCP/IP network.
All servers must be dedicated to the FDM application. The database engine is designed to operate on a single server with connected servers acting as local servers replicating to the primary host server.
Witness Server
Where FDM’s high availability mirroring is configured, you will require a SQL witness server. This server can be any existing SQL server you may have and can be any version of SQL Server 2005 - 2008, including the free version, SQL Server Express. SQL Server Express can be installed on any workstation running Windows XP or later and therefore requirement minimums will remain the same as a CAD workstation.
Communications Server
For any system supporting more than twenty-five (25) concurrent users or CAD clients, FDM recommends that an additional server is configured to run FDMeBiz and other FDM services. This communications server will manage communications from any device to the database. FDMeBiz compresses and encrypts data requests between the database and the client workstation. FDMeBiz uses pooled ODBC connections to connect to the main database server. FDMeBiz provides excellent response with bandwidth connections from as low as 14,000 kbps (using CDPD wireless), to dialup Internet connections, cable modems, and LAN connections.
FDM requires that each deployed workstation has full TCP/IP access to FDMeBiz. The recommended server operating system for the communications server is Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. The communications server is used to run the various FDM services. It has low disk activity and storage requirements, but high CPU and RAM requirements. The communications server is designed to operate on a single server.
